Managing Mobile Access as a Business Risk, Not Just an IT Issue

Mobile devices and apps are now a primary way employees access email, collaboration tools and line‑of‑business systems. Without appropriate controls, this creates risk in several areas:

  • Loss or theft of mobile devices containing business data
  • Unauthorised or insecure applications accessing corporate systems
  • Data leakage between business and personal apps
  • Inconsistent security controls across a mobile workforce
Mobile Device Management and Mobile Application Management help organisations reduce these risks by providing visibility, enforcing consistent policies and enabling rapid response to security incidents, while still supporting flexible and modern work practices.

“Mobile devices increase your cyber attack surface. MDM & MAM allows you to control applications, settings and track devices as well as reset them in the case of theft” – Chris Cox, Head of Infrastructure and Security Solutions at Diamond IT

Mobile Security Capabilities that Protect your Organisation

With managed mobile security in place, your organisation can:

✔ Enforce consistent security controls

Apply strong access controls, encryption and authentication across mobile devices and business applications to ensure only authorised users can access corporate data.

✔ Control access to business applications and data

Define who can access email, files and business applications, from which devices and under what conditions, reducing exposure from unmanaged or high‑risk access.

✔ Centrally manage policies, updates and configuration

Maintain consistent security and configuration standards by managing policies, updates and access rules centrally as devices, apps and users change.

✔ Protect data if a device or account is compromised

Remotely lock access or selectively remove business data from devices or applications if they are lost, stolen or no longer authorised.

✔ Support BYOD without compromising privacy or security

Enable secure use of personal devices by separating business and personal data, allowing corporate information to be protected without accessing personal content.

MDM, MAM or Both?

Mobile Device Management (MDM): full control of the device

Mobile Device Management (MDM) is used when organisations need end‑to‑end control over the entire mobile device. It allows security policies to be enforced across the device itself, including configuration, access controls and remote security actions.

MDM is most commonly used for corporate‑owned devices or higher‑risk environments, where full visibility and control are required. It enables organisations to standardise security settings, ensure devices meet internal standards and respond immediately if a device is lost, stolen or compromised.

This approach is well suited to environments where device control is essential to protect data, operations or reputation.

Mobile Application Management (MAM): control the data, not the device

Mobile Application Management (MAM) takes a more targeted approach by securing business applications rather than the entire device. Controls are applied at the application level, governing how corporate apps access, store and share business data.

MAM is commonly used in BYOD and hybrid work environments, where staff use personal devices for work. It allows organisations to protect business data within approved applications, while leaving personal apps and personal data untouched.

If a device is lost or a user leaves, business data can be selectively removed without affecting the rest of the device, reducing both risk and privacy concerns.

MDM, MAM or both?

Most organisations do not need a one‑size‑fits‑all approach. Some users or roles require full device control, while others only need application‑level protection. The right model depends on risk, workforce behaviour and how mobile access supports the business.

This is where a combined MDM and MAM strategy often delivers the strongest outcome.
