Rural and Remote Medical Services (RaRMS)
Established in 2001, RaRMS is NSW’s largest not-for-profit provider of general practice and primary healthcare services in rural and remote locations.
Spanning the Hunter, Central West, Remote Northwest and Southern NSW regions, and with their head office in Newcastle, RaRMS operates in some of the most socially and geographically challenging communities in NSW. Each year, they provide vital health care services to over 28,000 individual patients.
A Robust Solution consolidating patient and clinical information
In 2019, RaRMS received funding from the Western NSW Primary Health Network to engage multiple providers, including Diamond IT, to improve access to after-hours services in select rural communities. For RaRMS, technology and robust administrative systems play a critical role in ensuring they provide the most efficient and effective support to rural and remote medical centre teams and communities.
Diamond IT developed a custom integration solution to consolidate patient and clinical information between Healthdirect Australia’s After Hours GP service and the RaRMS Best Practice patient database.
This allows General Practitioners to be able to relay their clinical notes to patient’s regular Practitioners, and update Event Summaries to their My Health Record when consented by the patient. The service allows for a regional after hours medical database, which is My Health Record ready, complete with Argus secure messaging.
Database integration with key Health services

Due to the sensitive and critical nature of the information in this project, it was important to:
- Provide information to the destination system in near real-time.
- Retain a history of all integration attempts.
- Provide timely notifications to support personnel in the event of an outage at either the source or destination.

Through the implementation of this full, end-to-end solution RaRMS is better placed to support communities in and around Orange, Bourke, Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri, Walgett and Condobolin with vital healthcare services.
