Mai-Wel offers a range of services for people with a disability in the areas of Living Options, Working Life and Lifestyle & Leisure, along with Support Coordination and Outreach Services to the Lower and Upper Hunter, Maitland and Port Stephens areas.
As a registered National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider, Mai-Wel provides a range of disability support services that are varied to meet the goals and aspirations of each individual.
Mai-Wel is proud to have been one of the first disability organisations in Australia to gain Quality Assurance Accreditation and they continue to uphold the rights of people with a disability.
In addition to being a registered NDIS provider, Mai-Wel also delivers services, such as the Transition to Work scheme, through funding from the likes of the Department of Education, Skills, and Employment (DESE).
Mai-Wel’s ability to tender for renewals and new funding within the DESE stream is directly tied to compliance with the DESE Information Security Management System (ISMS) Scheme accreditation.
Additionally to DESE, other departments, such as the Department of Social Service (DSS) and Disability Employment Services (DES) Grant Agreements have also announced requirements in this area for organisations to adhere to.
With the requirements of this scheme continuing to evolve and become increasingly stringent, the Mai-Wel team identified the need for independent support in order to meet compliance.

“Mai-Wel provides participants with a service that is supported by a commitment to best practice, and the safety and security of our community is our highest priority. The DESE ISMS Scheme is designed to protect sensitive information by focussing on people, processes and IT infrastructure, so it was important to us to find a technology partner who truly understood our business and could support Mai-Wel to navigate the accreditation journey.” – Tracey de Friskbom, CFO
To ensure Mai-Wel was able to continue serving their community through the support of critical funding, they engaged Diamond IT’s Business Technology Consulting team to support them to commence the DESE ISMS Scheme accreditation process.
To achieve the first aspect of DESE ISMS Scheme accreditation, known as the M2 gateway, providers such as Mai-Wel must submit a Statement of Applicability (SoA) for their ISMS and a self-assessment of their ISMS implementation status and compliance with ISO 27001.
Diamond IT’s approach to supporting Mai-Wel commenced with the completion of a detailed gap analysis to demonstrate its current security posture and compliance position.
This analysis was a critical step in uncovering the information required to then complete and submit the initial requirements for their DESE ISMS accreditation journey:
- The scope of coverage.
- The Statement of Applicability, including the review of over 700 risk controls.
- The associated self-assessment report.
Diamond IT worked closely with Mai-Wel to submit the above-required documents, successfully passing what is known as the M2 gateway of the DESE ISMS Scheme in April 2022.

“Without funding from DESE, the services we provide our community would be severely impacted. We value the guidance and expertise that the Diamond IT team has given us to ensure we successfully passed the first step of our DESE ISMS Scheme accreditation”.
Diamond IT look forward to continuing to support Mai-Wel in achieving the next gateways in the DESE ISMS accreditation process.
