From a Granny Flat to Trusted IT Partner: 30 Years of Diamond IT

Diamond IT Celebrating 30 years of Helping Customers Succeed

Thirty years in technology is not something that happens by accident.

Diamond IT was established in 1996 by Founder and Managing Director Robert Buck, driven by a clear and uncomplicated goal: provide great service. There was no elaborate business plan or desire to chase trends, just a commitment to doing the work well and looking after customers.

As Rob recalls, “when I started the business in 1996 from my parents’ granny flat, the goal was simple. Provide great service.”  That principle has remained constant, even as the technology and the expectations placed on it, have changed dramatically.

The Early Days: Learning Through Change

In the early years, IT reliability was far from guaranteed. Much of the work involved troubleshooting unstable systems, working within tight constraints and learning quickly as new hardware and software emerged. Progress often came in small but meaningful steps and every improvement felt significant at the time. It was through this period that reliability became a defining principle for Diamond IT.

As Rob recalls fondly, “we spent most of our time battling the blue screen of death. I still remember feeling excited when the Pentium went from 200 to 233 MHz. And for many years, SBS was our world. Part of me still wishes it was.”

These experiences were not just technical milestones. They shaped an approach grounded in problem‑solving, adaptability and a practical understanding of how businesses actually use technology.

Lessons that continue to influence how Diamond IT works today.

Growing the Journey Together

In 1997, Martin joined Diamond IT, becoming part of the journey almost from the beginning. From those early days, the business grew alongside its customers, not just as technology evolved, but as expectations of IT began to change.

As Rob reflects, “from very early on, this wasn’t just about technology, it was about the people we worked with and growing alongside them over time.”

As customer environments became more complex, the role of IT shifted from simply keeping systems running to supporting growth, managing risk and enabling better decision‑making.

For Martin, that long‑term evolution has always come back to consistency.

“What’s kept Diamond IT going all these years isn’t any single technology, it’s the focus on doing the right thing by customers, year after year, even as everything around us has changed.” – Martin Thurgate, Director

Rather than chasing every new development, the focus remained on helping customers navigate change in a practical and sustainable way, an approach that ultimately shaped Diamond IT’s purpose: Helping Customers Succeed.

Diamond IT Today

Today, Diamond IT is a mature technology provider supporting customers across Managed Services, Business Technology Consulting and Software Development. While the scope of services has expanded, the challenges have not diminished.

As Rob explains, “the challenges may look different now, but they are no less significant. Today, Diamond IT is a mature technology provider and our focus is navigating the unstoppable forces of Cyber and AI.”

This reflects the realities businesses face today: increasing cyber risk, rapid technological change and a growing need for trusted advice rather than reactive fixes. Technology now underpins governance, resilience and long‑term decision‑making, placing greater responsibility on those who advise and support it.

Diamond IT’s role today is to help customers make sense of that complexity, apply technology with intent and reduce risk in ways that genuinely support business outcomes.

The Team Behind the Milestone

While technology has continued to evolve, the people behind Diamond IT have been the constant.

Over three decades, the business has been shaped by individuals who chose to build their careers here, grow alongside customers and take pride in doing the work properly. Some have been part of the journey for many years, bringing experience, continuity and a deep understanding of what customers need from a trusted technology partner. Others have joined more recently, adding fresh perspectives and new capabilities as the business continues to evolve.

For Robert and Martin, that commitment has always mattered. As they reflect, “we’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with people who care about the work and the customers as much as we do, and grateful for the role they’ve played throughout this journey.”

It is that shared mindset that has allowed Diamond IT to maintain consistency through change. By showing up, taking responsibility and building relationships that last. Behind every milestone are the people who make it possible.

Looking Ahead

“Thirty years is an important milestone, but it is not a finish line,” reflects Rob.

The technology landscape will continue to change, just as it always has. New challenges will emerge, expectations will evolve and the pace of change is unlikely to slow. What matters is how those changes are approached.

For Diamond IT, the focus looking ahead remains the same as it was at the beginning: doing the work properly, giving honest advice and standing alongside customers as their needs change. The tools may be different, but the responsibility that comes with supporting critical systems, managing risk and enabling good decision making is as significant as ever.

With experience built over three decades and a team that continues to grow and evolve, Diamond IT enters its next chapter grounded in what has always mattered most: reliability, accountability and a commitment to helping customers succeed.

“On to the next 30 years.”
